The Illinois Junior Golf Association is one of the largest junior golf associations in the country.  In 2017, the IJGA had over 2000 members between the ages of 8-18, and in 2018 the Association plans to conduct over 145 tournaments throughout the state of Illinois and Midwest.  The association is comprised of 3 separate divisions: Youth Development (ages 8-13), Playing Member (ages 14-18) and the Mid-American Junior Golf Tour (ages 12-18).

This IJGA/MAJGT internship position requires extensive travel throughout the state of Illinois as well as limited travel to Indiana and Wisconsin. This internship will help prepare you for a career in the golf industry and your future after school.  The IJGA/MAJGT internship program is very well respected and held in high regards by members, parents, golf professionals, and prospective employers.  The following information should help you get a better understanding of the tasks, responsibilities, and rewards that come with the 2018 IJGA/MAJGT internship.

Position:                Tournament Coordinator Intern

Summer Internship (3-Month) – May 15, 2018 – August 8, 2018

Description: The IJGA and MAJGT are looking for qualified applicants to learn from, observe, and assist the full-time staff as Tournament Coordinator interns.  The interns will travel extensively throughout the state of Illinois while assisting the IJGA and MAJGT. Potential travel to Wisconsin and Indiana will be necessary while assigned to the MAJGT division. During the internship, Tournament Coordinators will help conduct junior golf tournaments under the supervision of the Senior Director of Programming, Director of the Playing Member Division, Director of Youth Programming and Director of the MAJGT.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must have completed at least two (2) years of college
  • Basic golf knowledge (Rules of Golf experience a plus)
  • Excellent communication and public relation skills
  • Strong work ethic and desire to excel in the golf business, sports industry or event management/hospitality industry
  • Basic Computer skills
  • Desire to interact with junior golfers ages 8-18, and their families
  • Reliable transportation necessary
  • Willingness to endure long hours in various weather conditions
  • Willingness to travel for a period of a few days at a time, on a limited basis. Company transportation would be provided for these trips

 

Responsibilities:

  • Learn, observe, and assist Division Directors with the coordination and administration of all tournament activities, which includes 100+ events
  • Development Areas: On-course rules officiating, golf course set-up, inventory management, public speaking, starting/scoring of players; build relationships with PGA Professionals in the state of Illinois and throughout the Midwest
  • Regularly perform daily office and administrative activities
  • Social Media responsibilities for each event
  • Travel to host course tournament sites throughout the Midwest (majority in Illinois)
  • Be familiar with and willing to learn the USGA Rules of Golf

The Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) is a not-for-profit junior golf organization that provides playing opportunities for its members, conducts educational clinics, junior golf events, and acts as a junior golf information clearinghouse.  The IJGA’s mission statement is to educate and promote the game of golf while providing playing opportunities to juniors in the state of Illinois, while achieving “Better People through Junior Golf”.  The IJGA is the 2nd largest junior golf association in the country, with over 2100 annual members and 145+ tournaments.   The IJGA divides its programing into three (3) divisions:  the Youth Development Program (boys and girls ages 8-13); the Playing Member Division (boys and girls ages 14-18) and the Mid-American Junior Golf Tour (elite boys and girls ages 12-18 and female collegiate-aged participants up to age 23.)

Position:                Manager, Mid-American Junior Golf Tour

Description: 

The Manager, Mid-American Junior Golf Tour (MAJGT) is a full-time staff member of the IJGA who reports directly to the Senior Director of Programming, Illinois Junior Golf Association.  The Manager, MAJGT oversees the day-to-day operation of this division, including providing member service, managing a competitive schedule of events and providing pre-event, on-site and post-event management at each, interviewing and training Tournament Coordinator support staff, enforcing division and Association policies and providing strategic recommendations on program and association enhancements, current and future.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Working knowledge of the Rules of Golf
  • Excellent communication and public relation skills
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team environment and be receptive to new ideas and flexible to change
  • Experience in personnel management and volunteer coordination
  • Experience in written and oral business communications
  • Experience with on-site and in-house tournament administrative duties (BlueGolf knowledge preferred but not required)

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and oversee day to day operations of MAJGT and serve as lead staff member at all MAJGT events (18-20 events)
  • Develop annual tournament schedule with approval from Senior Director of Programming and MAJGT Committee
    • Coordinate with allied/outside association tournament directors and staff to ensure minimizing the overlap of events
    • Negotiate and contract with host facilities
  • Setup and manage all tournament-related division-specific elements in BlueGolf
  • Manage Program Point Races
  • Enforce program/Association policies
  • Provide strategic recommendations on program and association enhancements, including but not limited to; tournament sites, schedule structure, event formats/criteria, field determination policy, sponsorship opportunities and fundraising efforts.
  • Report to and serve as liaison to governing Committee (MAJGT Committee) per Association By-Laws
  • Manage MAJGT inventory control and ordering, abiding by the Association purchase order policy
  • Develop and enhance out of state player and coaches databases
  • Interview, train and oversee all tournament coordinators (16) in accordance with Association-wide internship program
  • Compile reports, event budgets, projections as requested
  • Assist in surveying division membership as requested
  • Assist, when required, in coordination of Association-wide events, programming and clinics.
  • Provide on-site event management as needed for all programs and special events, even if outside division of MAJGT
  • Fundraising initiatives support as needed
  • All other duties as assigned
